Our February Unschooling Resources & Activities

How was your February? We stayed at home a lot more than last month which was very refreshing, especially since next month will be a travel month for us. As usual we had an eclectic range of learning: rescue dogs, Milton Hershey, Rosa Parks, Because of Winn-Dixie, bar graphs & origami, salt painting & crystals,…

Our January Unschooling Activities & Resources

January was a whirlwind of a month. The first start of the month started off with out-of town family members coming to stay for 4 nights for a wedding (Alexa was the flower girl!). And then after that came a flurry of the usual gymnastics and swimming lessons, a pulled tooth for Jared, bowling, playing…

5 Ways Routines Can Lead to a Creative, Spontaneous, & Passionate Life

I’ve held an aversion for the word routine for quite some time. The word routine for me conjured up the same feelings as the word schedule-restricted, limited, reduced creativity, permanence, and unchanging. All those feelings made me feel chained down. I wanted feelings like freedom, spontaneity, unlimited creativity, openness, and abundance. Having all those lovely…

The Importance of Realigning Priorities

Back in the fall, we signed up to be part of a Roots and Shoots group. Its group’s focus is on community service, usually in the form of environmental cleanup or nonprofit fundraising and collections. They also provide a lot of opportunities to get close to rehabilitated animals and do other outdoor activities. Sounds great,…

The Messy Side of Interest-Led Learning

*Today I have a guest post by Amy Dingmann. I recently read Amy’s new book The Homeschool Highway: How to Navigate Your Way Without Getting Carsick. It’s a short read (I finished in two days) that’s overflowing with great advice, practical ideas and lots of encouragement. I asked her to share some of her wisdom…

Our December Unschooling Resources & Activities 2012

I knew December would be a busy month, and it felt busy, but as I put the finishing touches on this list, I was amazed at how much we did this month! I’m sure things were the same in your house, too.  And this was after I worked hard and not letting us get so…

Winter Activites Wish List

Two more days until winter! It certainly hasn’t felt like winter around here yet. In fact, Steve and Jared went for a late night bike ride just two days ago! But they’re predicting snow for this Thursday, so it looks like it might be a somewhat white Christmas. I started compiling our Winter Activities Wish…

Christmas Activities Wish List

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! It’s a time when, for just a few short weeks, we get to do things that we won’t do for another whole year. We can: drink eggnog, sing Christmas songs, bake special cookies, light Christmas candles, hang ornaments and give gifts to everyone in the family at…

The Value in Mistakes

“To err is to wander, and wandering is the way we discover the world.” – from Being Wrong: Adventures in the Margin of Error by Kathryn Schulz I used to think my life was made up of a long series of mistakes. Staying in an abusive relationship for nine years, which put me in the…

Thanksgiving Activities Wish List

15 more days until Thanksgiving! And I have so much to be thankful for this year. Always at the top of my list are: family, the ability to learn alongside my kids every single day, to give them freedom to learn and do those things they are interested in and passionate about, strength to battle…
