Summer’s Not Over!

When we were driving home from swim class early yesterday afternoon, I was a little surprised to see the large Halloween store banner on the empty storefront a half mile away from my house. It’s only the first week of September and already there’s a Halloween store that’s going up? It’s not even the end…

Is Interest-Led Learning Really Child-Led Learning….or Something Else?

When I first heard the term child-led learning I thought it was wonderful. Letting children take the lead in their learning was a new and exciting concept for me 8 years ago. But in the past few years, that phrase started to bother me. I want my kids to be self-directed learners. I want their…

Chasing Rabbit Trails…and Finding Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland was one of my favorite books when I was about 8 or 9. I’d sit by myself in the attic, reading it out loud, and acting out the story. I’d line up stuffed animals to be the Mad Hatter and the Door Mouse. I’d push two chairs close together and jump down…

Homeschooling with a Sick Child: My Interview with Kimberly Ehlers

What happens when your child is sick?  If it’s a serious illness, do you start to panic and think that they’ll get too far “behind?”  Do you focus on the limitations rather than on what everyone in the family could be learning from that illness?  About a year ago, I had the wonderful pleasure to…

How Interest-Led Learning is like Master Chef

I’m not a big cook. I like cooking and trying out new recipes, but I wouldn’t say I have a passion for making food. But I really like to watch cooking shows….a lot. In fact, I think I like to watch people cooking more than I like cooking myself! One of my favorite cooking shows…
